Then, when we'd run through the fire and ascended the transparent stairway back to our classroom, we eagerly pressed the two of them for answers – what did Okeno mean?

"I looked into the water," said Rigra, demure. "I found fresh crystals in one of the vases indicating that a curse had been laid." So that's what happened!"

And I examined the guard's broken neck and found a cherry-pit caught in his throat."

The whole group looked at the young adept, who was swelling with the sense of his own importance. But we had no idea what it was supposed to mean.

"He was surprised, don't you see? He choked to death!" cried Lhoger, frustrated. "Think about it – he was shocked when he saw the murderer. If it had been a member of his own clan – the Lord's daughter, for example - why would he be surprised? No, the murderer wasn't somebody he expected to see there..." And Lhoger fell silent. "Although the Master Chief Investigator did say that the pit was only circumstantial evidence and the guard could have choked in the absence of any crime at all. So, what did you two find?"

Yana and I glanced at each other and blurted out in unison:

"The vampire girl was hit with a Kiss of Death!"

As it turned out, we greatly enjoyed the feeling that we were heroes. First our whole class celebrated our victory. Then came Curator Veris, who gazed at us all with shining eyes, told us how well we'd done, that we upheld the honor of the Academy. And then all our instructors made a fuss over us. The best part of all was when Master Tesme came in and admitted that he had never had the slightest doubt about us, that until now we just hadn't been sure enough of ourselves to go out and prove what we knew to be true.
